Nicolás Jaar and the Other People

Focus

Launched in 2013 as a subscription-based ‘serial-label’, Nicolás Jaar’s Other People imprint and its fifty-some official releases offer a unique window into his explorative approach. Serving as an outlet for his own recordings as well as those of his like-minded musical kin, Jaar’s Other People showcase at Rewire 2019 presents label affiliates past, present and future. The Other People’s programme sees Pierre Bastien & Tomaga team up for their new collaboration, soon to be released on the label. Lucrecia Dalt & Alessandra Leone will present a live a/v performance, New York-based guitar virtuoso and Zs-member Patrick Higgins performs his new solo work ‘Dossier’, while Moscow-based electronic musician vtgnike makes his first ever appearance outside of Russia and John Bence and Nicolás Jaar himself complete the showcase.

Nicolas Jaar

Nicolás Jaar consistently pushes his practice into new musical realms. On the Saturday of Rewire 2019, the Chilean-American composer and producer will expand on acclaimed solo works like A.A.L (Against All Logic)’s ‘2012-2017’ and his Nymphs series by delivering a live/dj-set performance that invites the adventurous listener into Jaar’s characteristic blend of improvisation and compositional structure. The following day, he takes the stage at Grote Kerk as part of the Nicolás Jaar Group to present a new work for piano, saxophone, and electronics.

Pierre Bastien & Tomaga

Dubbed as the ‘mad musical scientist’, Pierre Bastien’s self-built machineries sit at the nexus of music and visual art. The poetic blend of live trumpet sounds with screen projections of his own mechanical sculptures gave rise to his cult-like following. Rewire will witness the Dutch premiere of a new performance with Tomaga, the darkly psychedelic, London-based duo of Valentina Magaletti and Tom Relleen.

Lucrecia Dalt & Alessandra Leone

Lucrecia Dalt is a Colombian-born sound artist and experimental composer who has honed her distinctive brand of surreal, otherworldly electronics over the course of a dozen solo releases, including a self-titled EP for Other People. At this year’s festival, she will unveil a new live audiovisual collaboration with visual artist Alessandra Leone that’s inspired by her acclaimed, new album, Anticlines. A journey through speech and song, the duo weave vocal processing and spoken word, mercurial ambient music, South American rhythms and volumetric beams of light into an exploration of space, boundaries and human consciousness.

vtgnike

First cropping up on Nicolás Jaar’s Other People label back in 2014, vtgnike is the alias of Russian producer Danila Avramov. A formidable force in Moscow’s underground electronic avant-garde, his musical output is a shape-shifting exploration of all manner of electronic genre, from soulful jungle and footwork to melancholic breakbeat, experimental hip hop and more ambient affairs. With his next record slated for release by Other People in February, vtgnike joins Nicolás Jaar for the Saturday Club Night programme at Rewire 2019.

Patrick Higgins

A visionary guitarist, composer and producer, Patrick Higgins‘ whose divergent output has seen him reinterpret the works of Baroque master Bach, compose for all shapes and sizes and serve as a core member of revered New York avant-gardists and Rewire alumni Zs. At Rewire 2019, he presents his latest solo effort, Dossier, a new record in four movements that was recently released by Nicolás Jaar’s Other People and engages with the politics, erotics and violence of contemporary digital life.

John Bence

Bristol-based composer and producer John Bence tackles epic narrative themes and uncompromising sonics with a trembling emotional punch. Trained in classical composition, he employs a unique cyclical technique of scoring, recording, manipulating, re-scoring and re-recording to combine prepared cello, home-recorded percussion, and his own voice. The result, released on Nicolas Jaar’s Other People in 2015 and Yves Tumor’s Grooming in 2018, is an intoxicating blend of harmony and noise that is fuelled by and navigates devastating emotion.
