08 Apr 2018

Two days down, one more to go – here’s the run down of the final day of Rewire 2018.

Electronic Music Innovation in Historical Context

We begin today at Korzo with the final talks in our daytime discourse programme.Folding linear time to bring technological innovations throughout the history of sound and music into the present day,we review the role of context and examine processes of restoring and reinstating the silenced and forgotten.

First up is musique concrète pioneer Beatriz Ferreyra. Presented as part of Musical Material, our recurring series of inspiring encounters with West Den Haag, the Argentinian composer retraces her career, experiences and musical practice. Following Beatriz is a presentation byNew York-based DJ, producer and electronic artist Antenes in which sheexplores her new performance, Telegraph Music.

Our talks programme wraps up with former The Wire editor Frances Morgan, in which she reflects on the history of electronic music research, whileNew Emergences – an initiative to openly discuss issues regarding gender equality in electronic music and sound art – explore the medium of radio in representing the female voice, the female experience and the “herstory”.

VPRO Vrije Geluiden

Taking place in the stunning and serene Nutstuin garden , the team at VPRO Vrije Geluiden will be hosting a trio of short performances with Park Jiha, Maryam Saleh, Maurice Louca & Tamer Abu Ghazaleh and Golden Teacher. Drop in from 12:00 to 18:00 for intimate pop-up performances.

Telegraph Music

Known for her inventive soundscapes and eclectic DJ sets, Antenes also operates a studio-turned-laboratory of self-made sequencers and modular synthesisers built from vintage telephone equipment. At Rewire 2018, she presents the world premiere of Telegraph Music, a Rewire and RE:VIVE commission (in co-production with COMM Museum) that explores the intertwined histories of electronic music and telecommunications by performing with a one-of-a-kind repurposed switchboard modular setup.

A musical Korzo

Following the afternoon talks, Korzo serves as the jump off for the evening’s performances. Following Telegraph Music, Beatriz Ferreyra ushers us through herintuitive method of free electroacoustic composition with an expansive live performance, while Tristan Perich presents the final part of his Young Artist in Focus, back to back solo performances of his worksNoise Patterns and 1-Bit Solo. At 18:45,South Korean composer and multi-instrumentalist Park Jihacrafts vibrant texturesof classic ambient and free jazz usingancient instruments like the piri, yanggeum and saenghwang, as well as the modern sounds of saxophone, bass clarinet, vibraphone and percussion.

Koorenhuis adventure

The Koorenhuis programme starts with a special Gaudeamus Muziekweek co-commission courtesy of Serbian composerIvan Vukosavljević andKorean pianist Il Hoon Son in which they’ve created a hybrid instrument created by placing an electric guitar inside the piano. The Egyptian avant-garde

Paard opens its doors at 17:45 today to two shining acts of the Cairo underground.Having gotten her start in music singing Misfits covers for a hometown punk band, Nadah El Shazly now crafts a mystical blend of Arabic songcraft, improvised avant-jazz, rock and electronica. For her Rewire 2018 performance, she conjures her debut album Ahwar to life with a full band. She’s followed byMaryam Saleh, Maurice Louca and Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, three of the most powerful and creative musical voices in the Arabic world today.Led by Maryam Saleh’s muscular and alluring vocals, they blend elements of traditional Arabic, jazz, rock, shaabi and electronic music into a wonderfully off-kilter sound in which layers of grit and beauty intertwine around the dystopian poems of their contemporary Mido Zoheir.
