With the first night of Rewire 2018 only just over, we’re already geared up for Day Two and the beginning of our discourse programme. Here’s an overview of our daytime programme.
Korzo opens its doors at 12pm with the first talks of our thematic discourse programme.With Sense of Self, we trace the acceleration in our understanding of selfhood, identity and representation, inviting MHYSA and SCRAAATCH’s E. Jane to reflect on her artistic practice andexplore notions of self-representation, performance and having the agency to reclaim identities. Her talk is followed by two multimedia presentations. The first byLegacy Russell, in which she introduces us to her concept of Glitch Feminism, and the second, a performative lecture byMarija Bozinovska Jonesin which she examines the self as a distributed, datafied identity.
Our guest of honour and Artist in Focus, Laurie Andersonspeaks to The Wire’s deputy editor Emily Bick at Korzo at 13:30. One of the most creative and daring voices around today, she reflects on her career at the vanguard of electronic music and performance art and takes us through her new performance, All the Things I Lost in the Flood, which will be presented at Grote Kerk on Sunday. Ahead of their performances in the evening, Quantum Natives rep Clifford Sage and Kepla’s Jon Daviessteer us intodigital technologies and network culture.Clifford Sage discusses his artistic practice and his involvement in the Quantum Natives collective, speculating on a particularly contemporary form of community-making, a public constituted predominantly online through shared production, while Jon Davies begs the question, ‘What has the democratisation of music software really done for underground digital culture?’
We close out our the day’s discourse programme with two artist talks at Korzo. In the first, visionary New York-based artist Juliana Huxtableretraces the steps of her intellectual wanderings, exploring how she navigates reality and challenges the cultural forces that lean upon her artistic practice. In the second, British electronic musician James Holden joins Resident Advisor for a live edition of their monthly podcast, Exchange.
Last night’s majestic opening at the Electriciteitsfabriek with Tristan Perich and the ten violinists of Royal Conservatoire String Ensemble is followed up with Tristan Perich’s unique collaboration with Canadian virtuoso Vicky Chow. ‘Surface Image‘ sees the pianist joined by 1-bit electronics setup featuring no less than forty loudspeakers. Doors open at 16:00.
Open to the all members of the public, all ages and all levels of musical experience, The School of Noise take you on a journey through the wonderful world of sound in their day-long, walk-in workshop at Koorenhuis. Starting at 12:00 and running until 17:00, you’ll be able to play instruments like the theremin and omnichord, observe beautiful Chladni patterns in sand and conduct your own orchestra of fruit and vegetables.
In addition to performances at Electriciteitsfabriek and Korzo, Tristan Perich presents his live installation ‘Drawing Machines’ at The Grey Space. Created with a pen suspended from two motors, whose motion is controlled by a code running on a circuit, the installation produces tremendous paper or wall drawings that explore notions of texture, noise, randomness and order. Come see it evolve in its final stages from 19:00 to midnight.
Opening its doors at noon, Zaal 3 hosts a special Rewire 2018 edition of The Hague Record Fair.Celebrating forward-thinking music in all its forms, they’ve invited an array of the finest local record shops and labels to suit all your crate-digging needs. There will also be lineup of local heroes behind the decks and food and drinks at the bar.
Rewire 2018 ticketholders can also head over to West Museumkwartier and West Groenewegje for the stunning Gary Hill exhibition.One of the most important artists of his generation, Gary Hill has been working at the intersection of video, sound, performance and installation art since the 1970s.West Den Haag’s ‘Always Rings Twice’ is a large-scale solo exhibition that celebrates the full spectrum of his work.
