‘What does it mean to be underground in 2018?’

How have Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon changed the music industry? What has the democratisation of music software really done for underground digital culture? Is exteriority possible without an overhaul of the hegemonic platforms? In his lecture, ‘What does it mean to be underground in 2018?’ UK-based independent researcher Jon Davies maps counterculture where communication, production and distribution are provided fewer opportunities online to exist outside of the mainstream. He proposes that the underground needs to be re-engineered from the logic of 20th century popular music in order to create new spaces of autonomy and independent scene making.

Jon Davies also performs live asKepla at Rewire 2018 on Saturday, 7 April.

This talk is part of the Rewire 2018 discourse programme, which can be visited free of charge.
