Second wave of artists and Day passes for Rewire 2018

08 Jan 2018

We are pleased to reveal the second wave of artists for Rewire 2018 as well as the first of this year’s festival themes. Festival passes and individual Day passes are now on sale.

Taking place in The Hague from 6 to 8 April, the eighth edition of Rewire presents Tristan Perich as Young Artist in Focus, special projects by Juliana Huxtable, Arto Lindsay & Zs and Fatima Al Qadiri, as well as live performances by Panda Bear,SOPHIE, Beatriz Ferreyraand James Holden & The Animal Spirits.

We’ve also just confirmed the following artists for Rewire 2018:
Avalon Emerson, Irreversible Entanglements, Antenes presents Telegraph Music, Nadah El Shazly (with full band), Lanark Artefax live a/v, Quantum Natives presents Nexus (II), (with ensemble), AMMAR 808, FAKA, LYZZA and Laura Agnusdei.

Acknowledging the wider cultural and social context to this year’s music programme, Rewire 2018 will explore several themes. Sense of Self invites artists to examine the self in a contemporary, often digital context; Network Music critically reflects on increasingly unmappable and non-linear forms of community making made possible through online platforms; and Electronic Music Innovation in Historical Context brings together a variety of projects and collaborations that (re)examine the social and material history of electronic and electroacoustic music.

More artists as well as an expansive discourse programme of artist talks, workshops and screenings will be announced in the coming months. Festival passes for the reduced price of €70 are available until 1 March at 12pm CET. Individual day passes are now on sale at Tickets.

Second round of artists in focus

Having introduced Laurie Anderson as our inaugural Artist in Focus, we are now proud to present Tristan Perich as the Rewire 2018 Young Artist in Focus. The New York-based composer and visual artist has transformed traditional forms of composition through his groundbreaking works that pair acoustic instruments with hand-made 1-bit electronics. As Young Artist in Focus, Tristan Perich will present an extensive programme spanning the full spectrum of his oeuvre, including live performances of award-winning compositions Active Field, Surface Image and Noise Patterns/1-Bit Solo as well as installations and an artist talk.

Joining Laurie Anderson and Tristan Perich on Rewire Sunday is the world premiere of Juliana Huxtable’s Triptych. A visionary artist who traverses New York’s art and club worlds, Juliana Huxtable is a writer, poet, multimedia artist, DJ and LGBT activist who explores the intersections of race, gender, queerness and identity through a vast range of artistic expression. Commissioned by Rewire, Triptych is a new performance for electronics, voice, harp, drums and video.

In another world premiere, online collective Quantum Natives present Nexus (II). A globally dispersed alliance of musicians and artists, Quantum Natives create new worlds of mutant electronic music and interactive online portals. A continuation of their Nexus project, the Rewire 2018 commission transports collaborative environments into a mirrored performance space, using audio-visual game-engine tech to explore site-specific inhabitations that link to the network’s diverse pockets and grottos.

For the Friday of Rewire 2018, we’ve confirmed rare live performances by SOPHIE and Fatima Al Qadiri. Having emerged from the shroud of mystery that surrounded her early years, LA-based producer SOPHIE presents her new live show, a multimedia performance replete with vigorous choreography, stunning visuals and stage design, and powerful and emotional new singles ‘Ponyboy’ and ‘It’s Okay to Cry’. Fellow club music visionary Fatima Al Qadiri presents Ja7eem, a live a/v show in collaboration with Emmanuel Biard that explores the theme of hell-fire using archive footage of burning oil fires during the First Gulf War.

On Saturday, we welcome one of modern music’s most vibrant artists in Panda Bear. A founding member of seminal experimental pop outfit Animal Collective and single-handedly responsible for some of the last decade’s most celebrated albums – think ‘Person Pitch’ and ‘Tomboy’ – Panda Bear heads to Rewire 2018 armed with his new release, A Day With the Homies, which, he explains, cuts through the fluff and delves into the “deeper zones of the frequency spectrum”.

James Holden returns to Rewire reborn as a live musician and bandleader. Joined by a full band, with RocketNumberNine’s Tom Page on drums and Etienne Jaumet on saxophone, James Holden & The Animal Spirits promises an expansive and psychedelic journey through the free-flowing jazz of Don Cherry and Pharoah Sanders, traditional Gnawa rhythms and James Holden’s own, self-described ‘folk-trance’.

Another recent festival standout making their return to Rewire is Philadelphia poet and noise artist Moor Mother. Following up last year’s powerful solo performance, she now joins critically-acclaimed free-jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements for their Dutch live premiere. Also making their Dutch debut are Arto Lindsay & Zs. A pioneering figure in New York’s late 70s no wave scene, Arto Lindsay is renowned for his unique fusion of abstract noise with the grooves of Brazilian stylings like tropicalia and Bossa nova. At Rewire 2018, he’ll be accompanied by New York trio Zs.

Rewire Sunday marks the world premiere of Telegraph Music by New York electronic artist Antenes. Commissioned by Rewire and RE:VIVE, Telegraph Music is a unique live performance for a repurposed switchboard modular setup that explores the intertwined histories of electronic music and telecommunications. Also performing on Sunday is Argentinian electroacoustic composer Beatriz Ferreyra. An influential member of Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM), Beatriz Ferreyra uses tape cutting techniques, acoustic instrumentation and electronic technologies to usher Pierre Schaeffer’s utopian musique concrète into the future.

Crafting a mystical blend of Arabic songcraft, improvised jazz, rock and electronica, Egyptian singer and composer Nadah El Shazly will perform her critically-acclaimed debut Ahwar with a full band, while Tunisian producer AMMAR 808, accompanied by three powerful vocalists from the heart of the Maghreb, reinvents North African tradition to create a mystical musical world driven by an ancient, pulsating beat .

Joining Nina Kraviz and Karen Gwyer for the Saturday club programme is Berlin-based DJ and producer Avalon Emerson. Having cut her teeth as a DJ in San Francisco’s storied warehouse party scene, Avalon Emerson serves up lush and eclectic sets that mix iconic new wave, soulful house, futuristic techno and exuberant rave with her own celebrated productions. Earlier in the night, fellow Whities affiliate Lanark Artefaxpresents the Dutch premiere of his live a/v show, channelling the hallmarks of classic 90s IDM into the realms of contemporary club music.

Also performing on Saturday are South African collective FAKA. The duo weave a daring exploration of love, identity and romance into the infectious rhythms of gqom to produce an intoxicating live show. On Friday, Amsterdam’s rising Brazilian-born DJ and producer LYZZA transforms the cracking drums, hardstyle kicks and trance melodies of her debut ‘Powerplay’ into a dizzying live set.

Ushering us into the realms of electroacoustic innovation on Sunday is Norwegian musician and composer Stephan Meidell. He conjures the intricate sonic universe of his latest album Metrics to life with the help of a full ensemble. Meanwhile, The Hague’s resident Italian saxophonist Laura Agnusdei fuses the acoustic, digital and analogue sound sources of her debut into lush electroacoustic soundscapes starring her saxophone in a leading role.

Lastly, we unfortunately have to announce that Farai have had to cancel their show at due to personal reasons and will therefore not be performing at Rewire 2018.
