Watch: Schroothoop perform live at Koninklijke Schouwburg Den Haag

14 Jan 2022

Witness the kinetic fusion of Brussels’ pre-eminent junk-jazz trio, as they present their ‘proper canned junk’ live.

Schroothoop was assembled by veteran multi-instrumentalists Rik Staelens, Margo Maex and Timo Vantyghem, who use discarded objects you'd find in a landfill - scraps of wood, old metal or plastic, plus garden and kitchen utensils - to build homemade drums, basses, string instruments and flutes. The band released their debut album "Klein Gevaarlijk Afval" (Small Hazardous Waste) in 2020, a record infused with sounds from around the world orchestrated by PVC flute melodies, jerry can beats and washtub bass lines.

During the Rewire 2021 - online edition, Schroothoop performed an exclusive semi-improvised show at Den Haag’s Koninklijke Schouwburg, bringing their experimental universe of exotica and electronica to life, incorporating Northern African Chaabi, jazz and reggaeton with Eastern melodies and Afro-Cuban rhythms.
