Konoyo Ensemble joins Tim Hecker at Rewire 2019

06 Dec 2018

Initially announced as a solo show, Tim Hecker will now present the Dutch premiere of his critically-acclaimed album Konoyo with an ensemble of traditional Japanese gagaku musicians.

Tim Hecker is one of the most consistent and exciting musicians of our times. Over the course of 15 years and twelve solo and collaborative albums, the Canadian composer and sound artist has cultivated a distinct brand of ‘ambient noise’ that is at once intensely physical and profoundly emotive.

For his latest project, Konoyo, Hecker travelled to Japan to record with Motonori Miura and the talented musicians of the Tokyo Gakuso ensemble. The result is a stunning, critically-acclaimed adaptation of traditional gagaku music – a form of classical Japanese music that has been performed in the imperial courts for centuries – that blends ancient instrumentation with Hecker’s characteristic synthesizers, ambient drone and warm harmonic noise.

At Rewire 2019, Hecker will present the Dutch premiere of Konoyo as animmersive live performance featuring traditional Japanese Gagaku musicians. Listen to ‘This Life’ below and learn more about the performance atTim Hecker & Konoyo Ensemble.
