Second round of artists and projects unveiled for Rewire 2022

27 Jan 2022

The eleventh edition of Rewire, the international festival for adventurous music in The Hague, takes place from 7-10 April across many of the city’s iconic venues. Since various European countries are gradually lifting COVID-19 measurements, including The Netherlands where cultural venues have recently reopened, we are eagerly looking forward to springtime and the upcoming festival edition.

We are happy to announce a second round of artists and projects for Rewire 2022. Next to previously announced artists such as Meredith Monk, Ryoji Ikeda & Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Grouper, Jenny Hval, aya, Circuit de Yeux, The Caretaker & Weirdcore, JJJJJerome Ellis, and Bang on a Can All-Stars, we have added 22 new names to the lineup. Today's announcement includes many premieres and new projects, and brings together a diverse palette of artists, genres and disciplines. This programme combines new and old musical traditions, opening up new sonic worlds to be discovered.

Rewire is proud to present Indonesian composer Dewa Alit and his ensemble Gamelan Salukat for a unique concert of Alit’s distinguished gamelan music. Vocalist/composer Stine Janvin and choreographer Ula Sickle will perform 'Echoic Choir’, a new collaborative work that references elements of rave culture and evokes the collective ritual of coming together on a dance floor. The 2022 festival features live premieres by Caterina Barbieri, Evian Christ, Jameszoo’s Blind Group, and claire rousay + ensemble, Pavel Milyakov & Yana Pavlova, Lamin Fofana, Joachim Badenhorst & Hiele, Flock, Gagi Petrovic, Dali Muru & The Polyphonic Swarm. Also premiering new music and performances are Coby Sey, Dasom Baek, Golin, Holly Childs & Gediminas Žygus, Marina Herlop, Mathijs Leeuwis, SKY H1 & Mika Oki. In addition, Anna von Hausswolff, Tirzah, and Tarta Relena will perform their latest albums.

More artists and special projects are still to be announced, as well as an expansive discourse programme of talks, workshops, and screenings.

3-day festival passes (admission on 8, 9 and 10 April) are available until 1 February for the reduced price of €89. Afterwards, festival passes will be available for €99. A preliminary day-by-day lineup will be made available on the 1st of February, along with individual day tickets, at www.rewirefestival.nl/tickets.

Second round of Rewire 2022 artists: In depth

Distinguished Balinese composer Dewa Alit is a key figure in contemporary Indonesian music. He is the founder of Gamelan Salukat, an ensemble that performs on instruments specially built to Alit’s designs, using a unique 10-note scale. For Rewire 2022 Dewa Alit & Gamelan Ensemble perform music fromtheir album Genetic – released on Oren Ambarchi’s Black Truffle label – among other pieces by Alit for the first time outside of Bali. Italian composer and musician Caterina Barbieri presents a site-specific show featuring new music, performed with four vocalists, while Swedish multi-instrumentalist Anna von Hausswolff performs a rendition of her most recent work ‘All Thoughts Fly’, centred around the church organ.

As the nightlife has been halted by the pandemic for almost two years, Rewire 2022 will offer different perspectives on contemporary club music. Within this context, vocalist/composer Stine Janvin, andchoreographer Ula Sickle present 'Echoic Choir’,a performance that meditates on the ritual of coming together on a dance floor around music in the late hours of the night. Celebrated club innovator Evian Christ will perform new material from his highly anticipated debut LP in a spectacular live show. SKY H1 & Mika Oki join forces for an immersive audiovisual live show based on SKY H1’s recent debut LP Azure and Holly Childs & Gediminas Žygus translate their second album Gnarled Roots into an intense and intertextual performance where music, movement, video and lights come together.

Prolific Russian musician Pavel Milyakov – perhaps best known as iconoclastic club producer Buttechno – has recently teamed up with experimental Ukrainian vocalist Yana Pavlova. The extraordinary duo brings songs from their moody debut record Blue and droning follow-up Wandering to the stage. Leading up to her new album on PAN, Marina Herlop showcases her inventive approach to human voices and synthetic electronics that evokes both the unpredictable vocal treatments of Meredith Monk and the electronic music innovations of influential artists like Arca. Catalonian duo Tarta Relena bring the staggering vocal harmonies of their recent debut LP Fiat Lux to a live setting. The prolific New York-based artist and musician Lamin Fofana presents the world premiere of ‘Shafts of Sunlight’, an open-ended improvisatory performance-installation with fragments from stretched out studio sessions.

Following the release of her critically-acclaimed second album, Tirzah returns to Rewire for a live set based around Colourgrade. With his debut solo album on the way, Tirzah’s long-time collaborator Coby Sey — a vocalist, musician, DJ and key figure in the contemporary South East London scene — will also perform brand new material, along with London friends & collaborators. Through her highly synthetic and catchy music, Amsterdam-based, Japanese-American Golin’s live show blurs the lines between mainstream pop and envelope-pushing electronic music.

Jameszoo’s Blind Group
is the playful and energetic new project by Dutch artist Mitchel Van Dinther. Accompanied by live musicians and a motorised, acoustic instrument called the Disklavier, Jameszoo presents the world premiere of a live rendition of his creatively restless new album — to be released in March by Brainfeeder. Composer, percussionist, producer, and instrument maker Bex Burch comes with brand new material as Flock, an avant-jazzy collaboration with Sarathy Korwar, Al MacSween, Dan Leavers and Tamar Osborn that embraces the compositional opportunities of musical improvisation. Celebrated jazz saxophonist and clarinettist Joachim Badenhorst performs for the first time as a duo with eclectic electronic producer Hiele. claire rousay, part of Rewire’s remote residency in 2021, will be accompanied by a small ensemble to translate the musical compositions of her upcoming album to a live setting.

For her hypnotic performance, the South-Korean composer and performer Dasom Baek uses various looping techniques to breathe new life into traditional Korean woodwind instruments such as the Daegeum, Sogeum, and Saenghwang. Pedal steel guitarist and composer Mathijs Leeuwis employs tape-loops to create complex and lush compositions based around the iconic Americana-sound of the steel guitar. Gagi Petrovic presents the world premiere of a live set based on two of his recent works, 'Vox Populi’ and ‘Choosing Freedom’, which will be performed with his custom-built instrument GEST, that allows him to play and compose electronic music with the use of hand gestures and light sensors. Dali Muru & The Polyphonic Swarm (filmmaker and poet Dalia Neis and musician and producer Enir Da) translate their ambitious debut record into an expressive and immersive live show featuring guest musician Chrls Lamouroux.
