Rewire Free programme

30 Mar 2016

DISCOURSE PROGRAMMEBesides an extensive concert programme, Rewire also offers a discourse programme of
lectures, artist talks and workshops throughout the weekend. This programme will offer interesting insights into Rewire’s line-up. Among the invited artists and writers are Noriet’s Thomas Burkhalter, Adam Harper, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Xiu Xiu.

FRIDAY

At Rewire festival, Thomas Burkhalter from Norient – Network for Local and Global Sounds and Media Culture – discusses various remix strategies with artists Mikael Seifu and Yannis Kyriakides.

This year’s Rewire club programme devotes special attention for cybernetic club music; a term coined by musicologist Adam Harper. This concerns underground club music often distributed through the internet, uncategorizable into any genre but distinguished by its otherworldly sound palette. Adam Harper will talk to several acts from the festival about this phenomenon.

SATURDAY
(Prins72)
In this workshop Kacper Ziemianin will introduce the participants to the basics of working with Arduino / Genuino micro controller, interfacing it with a computer software in order to generate, control and manipulate sound.

Featuring critically acclaimed artists from the Rewire programme and beyond, The Sound of Story is a rare opportunity to gain insight into what drives and inspires some of the world’s most accomplished and innovative sound artists and musicians. Made up of a series of talks, illustrated with clips and anecdotes, this is a chance for film and music lovers to hear about the speakers’ work and influences, and learn about the power of the soundtrack and importance of narrative.

Lakker will perform their new AV show for the upcoming RE:VIVE session EP ‘Struggle & Emerge’ at the Prins27 (10 pm) on April 2nd. The performance will be preceded by a discussion between Lakker and RE:VIVE founder, Gregory Markus. The trio will delve into the process behind making ‘Struggle & Emerge’, provide insight into the archival material used, the history behind the concept and Lakker will demonstrate their expertise for working with obscure sounds to create rich, dynamic and textural music.

SUNDAY

Musical Material: Music & Language consits of two performances and a moderated discussion with two artists who are fascinated by language and frequently apply this in their artistic, musical practice. Alessandro Bosetti and Felicia Atkinso test and discuss the details of their profession in an intimate setting. Musical Material is a collaboration between Rewire and West.

A rare opportunity to gain insight into Nicolas Becker’s unique working methods and multi-disciplinary approach, and learn about designing sound across a wide array of film and arts projects. Illustrated with clips, Becker will share details of his practice – devising a bespoke process to create original and distinctive soundscapes for each project – and explain the reasoning behind his artistic approach.

19:00 – 20:40 IOM-AIM research (Nutshuis)OM – AIM is a “state of the art” artistic research project by LOOS, investigating the design and realization of an interactive improvisation machine, an “orchestra” or “environment” consisting of computers, speakers, projectors, microphones, sensors, cameras, audience (as data input) and human improvisers. During Rewire, LOOS will present “Communication and Flow”, a theme that will raise questions about essential qualities of improvisation, like mimesis, adaptation, trust, unpredictability, surprise, destabilization and risk taking. IOM-AIM is an idea and concept by Peter van Bergen (PhD candidate at the conservatoire of Brussel and the Vrije Universiteit in Brussel) and is developed by software programmer Johan van Kreij.
