With Rewire 2019 just around the corner, we’re releasing a trio of captivating recordings from the Rewire 2018 Discourse Programme, including talks by New York nightlife and art world trailblazer Julianna Huxtable, MHYSA creator E. Jane and music historian Frances Morgan.
Rewire 2018 marked the introductionof exciting new collaborations and a radical evolution of the festival’s Discourse Programme. By far the most intense and in-depth edition to date, the Rewire 2018 Discourse Programme extended across each of the festival days and grounded the festival into meaningful segments and lasting considerations on the many folds inside contemporary music. Bringing together artists, performers and speakers for a series of talks, lectures, workshops and screenings, the programme circled around three key themes:Network Music, Sense of Self, and Electronic Music Innovation in Historical Context.
Among the many captivating talks that took place at Rewire 2018, we’re thrilled to be able to share a trio of recordings that reflect on the three festival themes. In the first, you can listen back to visionary artist Juliana Huxtable in conversation with journalist Emma Van Meijeren about her use of digital communities and online networks. In the second talk, prominent artist E. Jane introduces their alter ego MHYSA, described as “a Queer Black Diva and underground popstar for the cyber resistance.” In the third,we hear from writer and music historian Frances Morgan about the processes and practices behind the reconstruction of historical music technology and how these inform the history of electronic music.
