Rewire in 2016: A quick recap

23 Dec 2016

With the end of 2016 is in sight, it’s high time we glance over our shoulders and take stock of a year in which we introduced two new series and hosted our sixth festival.

First year of Rewire x Korzo

Last Friday, we hosted our fourth Rewire x Korzo event. Featuring spectacular performances by Anenon and Torus, and the bewildering presentation of ‘The Well’ by Koreless and Emmanuel Biard, it was a fitting finale to the first year of our new concert series. Debuting the new collaboration with The Hague’s contemporary music and dance theaterKorzo back in May, we’re proud to have already hosted performances by the likes of Tim Hecker, Colin Stetson, Forest Swords and Tyondai Braxton.

Musical Material

Also in 2016, our new performance and lecture series Musical Material. Set up in partnership with West as a series of inspiring encounters on Sunday afternoons, we invited specialists in the fields of music, art and reflection to test and discuss their work in an intimate setting. This year alone we shared unforgettable moments of introspection and experimentation with Alessandro Bosetti, Felicia Atkinson, Lucio Capece and Leo Svirsky.

Rewire 2016

But the crowning of achievement of 2016 will always be our sixth festival edition, one that extended over three consecutive days for the very first time. No mean feat if we do say so ourselves. So we’ll let a few others speak on our behalf. In the words of the Resident Advisor, “A truly rich blend of cutting-edge sounds, with an impressive number of special commissions and one-off collaborations”. And on the local front, the NRC Handelsblad concluded, “Rewire is urgent and unique in its programming,” while DJ Broadcast noted, “With three days, any enthusiast is up to speed on the latest trends in adventurous electronic music and the avant-garde”.

With more than 70 artists, including headlining performances by Animal Collective, Ben UFO, Battles and Teho Teardo & Blixa Bargeld, Rewire 2016 served up a broader pallet of adventurous, cutting-edge musical performances than ever before. In addition to the many new projects (25 premieres, of which 9 world premieres), the Rewire 2016 also included five commissioned works for the first time, like the unique collaboration between British elecrtronica virtuoso James Holden and the Moroccan gnawa-band of Maalem Houssam Guinia. Take a minute to savour all those special memories by revisiting our Rewire 2016 short documentary and a few photographic highlights below.

Thank you all

All in all, it’s been a pretty incredible year here atRewire. But it wouldn’t have been possible without all of the amazing performances byour artists, our volunteers, the generous support of our partners and you, our audience. So without further ado, a heartfelt thank you to all. We look forward to welcoming you back next year!
