The Egyptian experimentalist makes his Northern Spy debut with his most ambitious album to date.
Maurice Louca is one of the most gifted, prolific and adventurous figures on Egypt’s thriving experimental arts scene. A founding member of Lekhfa – with whom he performed at Rewire 2018 – Bikya, Alif and Dwarfs of East Agouza, the Cairo-born musician is also a celebrated solo artist. ‘Elephantine’, which is out now via Northern Spy Records, serves as both the pinnacle of his wide-ranging experience and a bold next step in his development as a composer, arranger and bandleader. Traversing everything from cosmic free jazz and psychedelic rock to Egyptian shaabi and Yemeni folk traditions, ‘Elephantine’ sees Louca helm an enormous twelve-person ensemble of musicians from all over the world on a panoramic odyssey of his rapturousavant-jazz compositions.
