James Holden & The Animal Spirits confirmed for Rewire 2018

27 Nov 2017

Ahead of the second artist announcement, we can reveal that James Holden will be bringing his Animal Spirits to Rewire 2018.

It’s no secret that we’ve kept a close eye on James Holden’s musical evolution since the release of his 2013 epic ‘The Inheritors’. Making his Rewire debut in support of that album in 2014 and returning for a residency with Moroccan Gnawa master Maalem Houssam Guinia in 2016, we’ve witnessed him evolve in sound and scope with each new project.

Reborn as a live musician and bandleader, James Holden’s performance with The Animal Spirits marks his third outing at Rewire and promises to be his most ambitious yet. Joined by a full band, with RocketNumberNine’s Tom Page on drums and Etienne Jaumet on saxophone, James Holden & The Animal Spirits is a wild ride that unites the melodic vigour of James Holden’s modular synthesizer with a supporting cast of brass, wind and live percussion. It’s an expansive and psychedelic journey through the free-flowing jazz of greats like Don Cherry and Pharoah Sanders, traditional Gnawa rhythms and James Holden’s own, self-described folk-trance.

“You won’t often find artists at Rewire who’ve played at the festival before, let alone twice, but inviting James Holden back feels like a natural step. His two-part collaboration with the Guinia family – of which the second was the residency at Rewire 2016 – had a profound impact on his artistic direction. We’re excited to see where James’s new project with The Animal Spirits will take us.”
