‘In Pursuit of Black Noise’ is an audiovisual performance and sonic meditation that surveys the everyday glitches that occur both inside and outside the digital realm.
Self-styled cyber witch Cy X merges digital art and emerging technology with the practice of witchcraft, using spells, rituals and alchemic practices in work that encompasses sound, video, installation and performance. Their sound pieces distort spoken word, electronics, rhythms, field recordings and noise to create portals, exposing their truth as a Black, queer, non-binary storyteller. Their digital work dives even deeper, incorporating data bending, glitch art and UX practices to reveal how the white supremacist gaze and the global tech infrastructure are altering our reality.
‘In Pursuit of Black Noise’ was originally created for and presented at Rewire 2021 - online edition in May 2021 as part of our thematic programme (Re)setting, which examined the way humans and sound relate to changing environments. How do we experience performances online, use streaming platforms, and how can artists share their work and collaborate both digitally and remotely?
