Evoking the afrocentric spirit of the esteemed tradition of spiritual jazz and improv in her native Chicago, Angel Bat Dawid graced us with an outstanding performance at Rewire 2019. In a relatively short time, she has supplanted her place as one of the lynchpins of Chicago’s avant-garde, and following the release of her excellent LP ‘The Oracle’ early this year we were excited to welcome her to The Hague for her European debut. Her performance in the garden of Nutshuis was captured by VPRO Vrije Geluiden.
Performing alongside a 7-piece ensemble, Bat Dawid began her performance by exploring the space of the garden with her emotive ‘Indestructable Consciousness Chant’:

She paid homage to the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra Trumpeteer Phil Cohran, with a contemporary take on his song ‘The African Look’, in which Bat Dawid demonstrated her talents as a multi-instrumentalist:

The performance would not have been complete without a reference to Sun Ra himself, which Angel Bat Dawid provided with a refined take on his composition ‘Enlightenment’, recreating the afrofuturism that the Arkestra continue to explore:
