The bleeding edge of Rewire Saturday

Preview

The Saturday programme at Rewire 2017 is not for the faint of heart. Helmed by Michael Gira and his Swans, and accompanied by the likes of Wolf Eyes, Pharmakon, Sex Swing and Moor Mother, the Saturday evening in Paard van Troje – with abrief Prins27 excursion –drags you right to the bleeding edge of contemporarynoise rock and experimental electronics. In an attempt to prepare you for the impendingwall of sound, here’s a pithy primer of our abrasive antagonists.

Swans

The legendary New York experimental outfit surrounding singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira, Swans hasmadea profound impact on the musical world over the course oftheir turbulent30-year existence, laying the foundation for bands like My Bloody Valentine, Godspeed You! Black Emperor andSunn O))).Blazinga fiercely uncompromising path through no wave, art-rock, industrial, sludge, doom, drone and folk, their live shows clock in at no less than twohours, and are renowned for being some of the loudest, heaviest and most punishing musicalexperiences out there.

Swans begins at 23.00 in Paard I.

Wolf Eyes

Formed in Detroit back in 1996, Michigan trio Wolf Eyes have evolved from underground curiosities into noise music pioneers in the course of their 20 year existence. Spending their early days honing their unique cacophony of industrial noise, death metal, experimental electronics, hardcore and free jazz in the basements of their hometown, Wolf Eyes have built a cult-like reputation through their absurdly prolific output, extensive touring, and the distinct style of sonic abjection they call ‘trip metal’.

Wolf Eyes opens up Paard II at 19.45.

Pharmakon

A figurehead in the New York’s contemporary underground scene since the age of seventeen, Pharmakon is the alias of power electronics specialist and noise artist Margaret Chardiet. With a selection of keyboards, pedals, loops and the guttural sounds of human pain – her own screams, growls and heaves – Pharmakon constructs a cavernous sonic nightmare, engaging her voice and breath to the point of collapse, and dragging audiences into her bewitching disorientation.

Pharmakon takes the stage at 21.00 in Paard II.

Moor Mother

The viscerally charged output of Philadelphia resident Camae Ayewa, Moor Mother is an incredibly gifted and honest poet and noise artist who continues the legacy of African-American female musicians by giving voice to the unheard: expressing their sorrow, pain and anger. Equally channelling her punk background and the spirit of Sun Ra, Moor Mother simultaneously wields harsh, cathartic noise and freely improvised textures of cosmic jazz.

Moor Mother performs at 23.00 in Prins27 – Hall.

Sex Swing

The coming together of skilled, stray musicians across London’s avant-rock scene, Sex Swing operate at the most brutal end of the musical spectrum: dealing in physical psychedelia, punishing doom, ritualistic industrial and bruising volumes of avant-garde noise. While the slow-burning bodily sonics of their self-titled debut probes the outer reaches of experimental music, you need the power, intimacy and risk of their uncompromising live show to do their sound any justice.

Sex Swing kicks off at 22.15 in Paard II.
