Rewire education is coordinated by Zoe Reddy, a musician, artist and educator. Zoe’s own background is in performance and video art and electronic music. Zoe began as a workshop teacher by Rewire, focusing on workshops that created interactive sound art installations and sculptures. Three years ago Zoe took on the role of education coordinator and has since focused on expanding the program’s reach and being a more active part of Rewire festival with free walk-in workshops for children and open-age concerts.
2019 Education Highlights:
Rewire’s education programme developed further in the lead up to the last edition of the festival, with new ground being covered, combining music and technology. Here are a number of the notable highlights.
Gerri Jäger workshops and performance at the International School of the Hague
For the second year in a row Rewire education collaborated with the International School of the Hague and their orchestra students to create a new musical composition and performance. Over January and February lauded drummer, musician and composer Gerri Jager taught a series of five workshops focused on improvisational skills to secondary students studying music and art, culminating in a concert performance featuring students lead by Jager at the International School of the Hague.

My sound dream at Schilderswijk University
Rewire education created an educational project for Schilderswijk University, a growing Saturday school with around 45 primary school students from the Schilderswijk neighbourhood in The Hague. The project featured workshops and soundwalks lead by performer, composer and instrument developer Dianne Verdonk (who also performed at Rewire 2019), RORO (artist duo from Amsterdam) and Suzanne Ypma from the electro pop group Woof! Woof!.
CRAB lab at Rewire festival
In this all-ages workshop, The Hague-based and Studio Loos-affiliated collective Crab Music invited visitors to the Creative Sound Lab, a buzzing sound laboratory where they were encouraged to discover and mix their own sound. Hands-on electronic instruments such as the Hermit Crab and Victorian Synthesizer were available for participants to use to explore their sonic possibilities. In short, the workshop offered a chance to work with sound in an accessible, fun and educational way.

Dianne Verdonk workshops
Dianne Verdonk is a performer, composer and instrument developer. For Rewire education Dianne developed a workshop for secondary school students, was active in the primary school project with Schilderswijk University and was a performer at Rewire festival itself. Starting from the question “what else is music?”, This workshop explored themes that are central to her work; in particular the dialogue between sound and (physical) form and making electronic music / sound elements visible and tangible. By doing this, Dianne wanted to offer students a broader understanding of music and sound / sound.
In the lead up to Rewire 2020, the education programme plans to grow again. Keep up to date and follow some of Rewire education’s projects here
