On Saturday 30 November, Dutch composer Martijn Comes will present two newly commissioned works the Stevenskerk in Nijmegen as part of Resonance. Martijn Comes will perform together with Malgosia Fiebig alongside Kali Malone and NYX.
“A lot of world problems at the moment deal with time: the shortage of it in society and the 24 hour social media economy, the climate crisis, the spiritual crisis, chronological time vs ‘natural time’, the time we need for loss of loved ones, the search for meaning, time for health,” explains Comes about the origins of the commission.
Comes is well versed in composing for the carillon. His piece ‘Eann’, written for his son, was commissioned by the municipality of Haarlem for St Bavo’s church and opened Le Guess Who Festival in 2017. Malgosia Fiebig performed the piece, the city carillonneur of Utrecht and Nijmegen, who will also perform Comes’ first Resonance work on the Stevenskerk’s carillon. Titled ‘Radiance’, the work is a poetic interpretation of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 in the Old Testament. The second piece debuting at Resonance is called ‘Time’ and will be performed inside theStevenskerk. This second work for tape and electronics considers the concept of time in the context of the church and theology through manipulating and reinterpreting existing sound sources.
Listen to Comes’ piece ‘Mother’, written in honour of the artist’s mother, commissioned by Gaudeamus Festival in 2018 and performed by Malgosia Fiebig:
