Rewire 2019 Symposium

On the Friday of Rewire 2019, we hosted the Instrumental Shifts Symposium exploring new frontiers in computer science, music, and future technologies.In collaboration with The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision RE:VIVE initiative and WEST Den Haag, we brought together a wide range of thinkers, artists and researchers for a full program of presentations and debate on the technology and theories shaping our present and immediate futures. Here’s our highlights from a day probingartificial intelligence networks, generative systems, and more.

Dr. Thor Magnusson:

In his opening address, Dr. Thor Magnusson, Head of Music at the University of Sussex, presented his book, ‘Sonic Writing’, and examined how contemporary music technologies trace their ancestry to previous forms of instruments and media.

Prof. Mick Grierson:

One of creative computing’s leading experts, Professor Mick Grierson of Goldsmiths Digital and University of the Arts London’s Creative Computing Lab detailed his work on Massive Attack’s 20th anniversary of ‘Mezzanine’ and described the technological challenges of producing CD quality output from neural networks.

Laura Agnusdei:

Laura Agnusdei is a saxophone player and electronic musician. Her electroacoustic compositions feature the saxophone as the main voice within sonic landscapes that shift between melodies and textures, song form and improvisation, fusing acoustic, digital and analog sound sources to create emotional states that change from track to track.

Panel: Dick Rijken, Ash Koosha, Dr. Róisín Loughran:

The Instrumental Shifts Symposium concluded with a panel discussion that forecasted where we are going as artists, researchers and technologists. Moderated by STEIM Director Dick Rijken, the panel reflected on the benefits of partnerships between artists and knowledge institutions, the limitations of technology and how we can overcome these barriers, how we can be ethical and whether it even matters.
