Get to know Bang on a Can

With a genre-fluid approach, the ensemble has consistently defied categorization since their formation in 1992. We’re honoured to have them present multiple new works at Rewire 2022. Get familiar with Bang on a Can and what they’ll be presenting at Rewire below.

One of the world’s finest contemporary music and improvisation ensembles, Bang on a Can All-Stars are celebrated for their kinetic live performances and highly innovative recorded work. The group’s notable projects include their landmark recordings of Brian Eno’s ambient classic Music for Airports and Terry Riley’s In C, as well as live performances with Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Dewa Alit, Don Byron, Iva Bittova, Thurston Moore, Owen Pallett and others. The All-Stars were awarded Musical America’s Ensemble of the Year and have been heralded as “the country’s (US) most important vehicle for contemporary music” by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The pleasure of experiencing Bang on a Can perform live derives from their non-conventional approach to ensemble-based music. Their ultra-dynamic live performances cross the boundaries between classical, jazz, rock, world and experimental music, taking music into uncharted and exciting territories that go against the grain of conventional performances. Known for their adaptational skills and collaborative spirit, no performance by Bang on a Can is ever really the same. During Rewire 2022, the ensemble will perform two special collaborations with other ensembles.

Meredith Monk & Bang on a Can All-Stars - MEMORY GAME
As part of a special focus programme on Meredith Monk, Rewire 2022 presents this performance of MEMORY GAME by Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble and Bang on a Can All-Stars. Drawing from Monk’s extensive catalogue of groundbreaking compositional work, Bang on a Can All-Stars join forces with Monk and members of her ensemble to present nine reorchestrated pieces from Monk's varied theatrical productions, most prominently The Games: a science fiction opera. As the title implies, it’s not only a fitting retrospective of Monk’s lasting artistic triumphs, but also a compelling reminder how Monk’s music can play with our expectations in poignant and compelling ways.
