Resident Advisor’s Jordan Rothlein dials up Mutual Dreaming and Sustain Release founder Aurora Halal in herBrooklyn loft to find out how she’s been enjoying the spotlight.
“When I called Aurora Halal at her Brooklyn apartment recently, she was buzzing, if a little under the weather—the dual symptoms of having just pulled off a major, sleep-depriving accomplishment. A little more than a week before, Halal and her partner, Zara Wladawsky, staged a weekender called Sustain-Release at a summer camp in the Catskills. They eschewed outside investment and oversight—”I’m personally allergic to corporate environments and club environments, it’s just not something I’m interested in,” Halal said—opting instead to build the thing from the ground up. “PR” meant social media chatter and a sort of pre-party rally at the Bossa Nova Civic Club in Brooklyn with DJ Richard, where presale tickets were sold alongside handmade posters. Its closest brush with branding was a late-night, six-hour Bunker showcase. And rather than stake a claim in a crowded international festival market, Halal and Wladawsky booked mostly local acts and opted not to use the word “festival” at all.”
