As Zs, the New York trio of saxophonist Sam Hillmer, guitarist Patrick Higgins, and renowned Liturgy and Guardian Alien drummer Greg Fox dispense endless streams of hypnotic free-jazz, brutal prog and minimalist drone. Heralded as one of the strongest avant-garde bands in New York, the trio are primarily concerned with making music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of both performer and listener. The trio’s first release in their current incarnation, ‘Grain’, was a two-sided EP that sourced the group’s previously material, effectively cannibalizing the sounds of Zs past to create two continuous, 21-minute visions of their future. Returning in 2015, the trio unveiled the highly acclaimed ‘Xe’, a full-length ‘debut’ that was recorded in a single take without any extra frill – no overdubs and no editing.
