What started as a sample-based project – which used time stretching, pitch shifting, and other club music conventions to reimagine early vocal polyphony – XTC in the XIV soon transformed into a live vocal ensemble who play the voice as if it has been chopped and pasted and controlled by a sequencer. The group consists of vocalists Em Silén, Siri Flensburg, Elin Oskarsson, Maja Kamne, Hanna Andersson, and electronic musician Walter Berge. Through live electronics and vocal performance, XTC in the XIV take the ancient and carry it into the present on the wind from their singing lungs: blending syllabic chants with intricate melodies and choral arrangements, they bring a new and machinic-sounding interpretation of ancient and classical styles of vocal music to life.
