Violeta García

Violeta García is a cellist, composer, improviser, and curator from Buenos Aires who is now based in Bern. Her work combines free improvisation, contemporary classical, and hybrid electronic noise, and utilises the violoncello, analogue synthesisers, and her voice. Her debut solo album ACERO (2018) was made for a customised instrument and was inspired by field recordings from her childhood; her sophomore album FOBIA (2022) was composed for cello. Her latest record, IN/OUT (2025), saw her bring her cello to a cave in Geneva – which formerly housed the city's reservoir – to create a site-specific work through expanded cello techniques. At the festival, García presents one of her hypnotic live sets for cello. In a ballet of discord and harmony, her hands dance across the instrument, willing the cello to move out beyond its normal sonic bounds into a space of tension and release, of fluency and floundering, and of cavernous scale.
