Enigmatic underground dance power-house Two Shell perform a live set at Rewire. On their debut release with iconic UK label Livity Sound, Access E​.​P. (2019), the simmering elements that make up Two Shell could already be heard: Dada-esque vocal collaging, minimal club percussion, and bright maximalist melodic synths. In the years since, they have developed and mutated their sound, pushing it into bassier terrain with a dose of hyper-pop melodies and glitched-out cyberpunk production. Two Shell are textural and lively, creating a type of serious, deep production style that is, at the same time, tongue-in-cheek and utterly ridiculous. Whether they’re reworking (see: lovingly mangling) pop – such as their iconic Sugababes flip “Round” or their ChatGPTechno reimagining of Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You” – or creating absurdist, charming, unique original music, like with their new eponymous debut album on label Young, Two Shell have a penchant for chaos and fun. Their playful music brings a humorous and self-aware edge to the dance genre which can sometimes take itself too seriously.
