Tristan Perich & ensemble 0

Open Symmetry

NL premiere

Tristan Perich is a New York–based composer whose music crosses the divide between electronic and classical; his sonic explorations pair string instruments, pianos, organs, and other acoustic instruments with custom-built 1-bit electronics. His lo-fi 1-bit approach forms a unique musical language in Perich’s compositions, as information is crushed and squashed into wailing and competing melodies, as established on his spellbinding debut 1-Bit Music (2007), and follow-up 1-Bit Symphony (2010). Inspired by the aesthetic simplicity of math, physics, and code, his compositions are anything but simple. From this limited palette, worlds of every colour are painted. What is monophonic becomes vibraphonic through collaboration with French group, ensemble 0, who perform on Perich’s latest release, Open Symmetry (2024), released on Erased Tapes Records, and will perform the work at Rewire 2025. Open Symmetry, composed for 3 vibraphones and 20-channel 1-bit electronics, builds a harmonious structure of alien beauty – reminiscent sonically of video game soundtracks of yore, yet with a harmonic and tonal depth impossible to the sound chips of such devices.
