Thomas Ankersmit is a musician, composer, and specialist on the Serge Modular analogue synthesiser, who has released on labels such as PAN, Touch, and Shelter Press. His music combines intricate details and vast textures to create spatial experiences of sound. For his latest project, The Tcherepnin Series, Ankersmit has travelled to the most iconic original Serge systems at studios across the world: from Harvard and Columbia Universities, to EMS in Stockholm, GRM in Paris, and Willem Twee in Den Bosch. The Serge systems in each of these studios are unique; for The Tcherepnin Series, Ankersmit spent 2025 creating recordings with each of them, bringing the voices of these different synthesisers together for the first time. At Rewire, Ankersmit performs live on his own Serge system and combines this with recorded material from this global network of Serge synthesisers. Creating both large cacophonous noise and subtle whirring texture, there is an uncontrollable warmth pulsing through these systems, often making them collaborators themselves in the music, full of unpredictable character.
