Describing themselves as a "non-jazz" band, Taupe is a trio of air-tight musicians swerving between taut metronomic precision and turbulent, unwieldy chaos. Their sound is built around three instruments: saxophone, guitar, and drums. Peculiar time-signatures and angular, frenetic riffs characterise their sludgy free(math)jazz(rock) performances. Ever-informed by a DIY ethos, there is a wonky charm to Taupe's music, bridging the gap between the nostalgic no-wave disorder of DNA or James Chance and the squeaky-clean precision of contemporary groups like goat (jp) or Horse Lords. Their performances rumble and pulse with a fun anarchic spirit which takes any pretensions or self-seriousness out to the woodshed. Tight saxophone trills are wended open by snarling doom-guitar riffs and crashing cymbals in their alchemical, adrenaline-filled performances.
