Senyawa

Performing on Sunday 5 April.

Vocalist Rully Shabara and instrument-maker Wukir Suryadi form the award-winning and revered Indonesian duo Senyawa. Originating from Jogjakarta, for over a decade the pair have been weaving Indonesian folklore and traditional music together with avant-garde influences to create a singular and thoroughly contemporary kind of Indonesian new music. Beside many notable solo records, Senyawa have collaborated and performed with a wide range of influential musicians, including Keiji Haino, Rabih Beaini, Greg Fox, Melt Banana and Oren Ambarchi. Senyawa’s current album for Sublime Frequencies, ‘Sujud’, is rooted in the Bahasa Indonesian word “tanah”, meaning “soil-ground-land-earth”, and features Shabara’s spirit-summoning vocals alongside folk metal, punk and droning guitar sounds from Suryadi playing an instrument made especially for the record.
