SANAM is a Beirut-based sextet that infuses the sounds of traditional Egyptian song and modern Arabic poetry with hypnotic post-punk, kosmische kraut-rock, and vivid psychedelia in a genre-defying blend of jazz, electronic, and improvisational music. Formed in 2021 following an an invitation to collaborate with Hans Joachim Irmler (of Faust), the group features Sandy Chamoun on vocals, Antonio Hajj on bass, Farah Kaddour on buzuq, Anthony Sahyoun on guitar and synth, Pascal Semerdjian on drums, and Marwan Tohme on guitar – each an accomplished musician in their own right with ties to influential Lebanese acts like Kinematik, Postcards, Al Rahel al Kabir, and Oviid. Their debut album Aykathani Malakon released to critical acclaim in 2023. Its follow-up, Sametou Sawtan (2025), built upon the energy of their debut, giving sound to the urgency, mysticism, and emotional upheaval of contemporary life in Lebanon and its surrounding region. SANAM's music treads the fertile middle-grounds between folklore and futurism, summoning a unique, earthy sound stretched across time and space.
