Sludgy, dark electronics and trap percussion and swirling pillars of noise and texture encircle Sacred Lodge – the project of Paris-based producer and sound artist Matthieu Ruben N'Dongo, also known as Coldgeist and as a member of NZE NZE. The mayhemic music he produces stems from the visceral energy of horrorcore and experimental dub while also paying homage to his Equato-Guinean heritage. Sacred Lodge is in some ways an ethno-musicological project, looking into the Fang people (from which his father originates) and their cosmogony known as Mvett. N'Dongo's research focuses on the role of music both in ritual contexts and as a social function; as such, his productions proliferate with ceremonial rhythms, and are perforated by screams, hollers, chants, and brutal, powerful bass. For him, the scream represents a sonic gesture of decolonisation and bodily insubordination. Through voicing, distorting, and amplifying these sounds, Sacred Lodge creates a bristling and unruly sound, as heard on his cacophonous second album Ambam (2025), released with Avon Terror Corps, and performed live at Rewire 2026.
