Raja Kirik

Raja Kirik is the project of composer, DJ/producer and digital artist Yennu Ariendra and Johanes “Mo’ong” Santoso Pribadi, an experimental music composer and instrument builder, both hailing from Indonesia. Transposing Jaranan Buto folklore and the myth of the King Menak Jinggo (the Dog King) into present day, Raja Kirik explore music and dance as a vehicle for protest. Developed from extensive artistic research into the history of Java under Dutch colonial rule, Raja Kirik muses on the island’s legacy of violence, war and oppression – and the ritualistic Jaranan Buto dance that evolved as an expression of resistance. Thankfully rescheduled from Rewire 2020, the duo will present a recorded performance at Rewire 2021.
