Facing the Spills is a collaborative improvised film performance from filmmaker and artist Polina Medvedeva and drummer and sound artist Andreas Kühne. Medvedeva’s work across documentary filmmaking, A/V performance, and installation focuses on informal economies and non-conformist communities; Kühne's production and sound-making follows a site-responsive and relational approach, incorporating field-recorded improvisations with objects and materials from the places he sonically researches. In their collaborative audiovisual performances, live film assembly and improvisation function as methods for exploring new modes of listening, perception, and collective imagination. Facing the Spills focuses on the border region between Finland, Norway, and Russia, examining the impact of human and nation-state activity on the landscape, the displacement of Sámi communities, and the implications of rare earth mining in the area. Through a combination of vast scenic visuals and textural ambient experiments, the work invites audiences to listen-with the genealogy of a changing Arctic border landscape.
