Osmium is a collaboration between Oscar-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir – who composed the scores for, among others, Joker (2019), Chernobyl (2019), and Tár (2022) to much critical acclaim – vocalist Rully Shabara of Senyawa, musician James Ginzburg of emptyset, and Grammy-winning composer and sound designer Sam Slater. This improvisational group, playing for the first time in the Netherlands at Rewire, performs using augmented, custom-made acoustic instruments, lathered in distortion and electronic manipulation. Primordial growls, harsh breathing, and pre-lingual utterances sputter out across vicious distortion, industrial drones, and metallic, percussive noise. Nothing else comes close to sounding like the gripping, infernal music of Osmium. Despite eliciting a sense of horror and dread, their improvisations are compelling; these morbid machinations of undeniable dynamism and strength must be heard to be understood. Arriving like an ominous vapour rising out of the soil from some unfathomable place beneath, Osmium’s dungeon electroacoustics reveal harrowed histories and prophesize catastrophic futures. Osmium will perform material from their forthcoming debut album, slated for release later in 2025.
