Nailah Hunter

European premiere

Nailah Hunter is an LA-based multi-instrumentalist and composer creating mystical folk and ethereal pop with an ambient underpinning. Hunter’s full-length debut Lovegaze (2024) on Fat Possum beckons listeners into her enchanting sound world of spectral delay, glistening timbre, and otherworldly vocals. Picking up the harp while studying music at CalArts, Hunter quickly formed a close bond with the instrument, locking herself in her room to practise it for six hours per day. She was drawn to its majestic tones that summon to the mind dream-worlds and fantasy realms. It’s from this basis, among ambient soundscapes of echoing pads and wondrous harp compositions, that Hunter’s voice shines. In the solemn organ tones of “Adorned,” an inspiration from Hunter’s early life can be heard: growing up as the daughter of a Belizean pastor, she first learned music in the context of the church, playing drums, guitar, and singing in the church’s choir. This spiritual quality that courses through her songs is undeniable; they are soothing and yet ask questions of the listener at the same, luring them deeper into the submerged, reverberating, and assuring world of echoes she has so artfully created.
