My New Band Believe is the new band from, believe it or not, musician Cameron Picton – the multi-instrumentalist and vocalist of the group Black Midi, who are now on indefinite hiatus. My New Band Believe's songs are surely complex and intricately written, yet the group also swerves into joyous and vibrant outbreaks of melody and unfettered self-aware silliness. They channel Brit pop's slacker-academic voyeurism while also sounding like a contemporary take on the virtuosic instrument-first songwriting of a prog group like King Crimson and the vibe-first experimentation of a krautrock group like Can. While their debut single "Lecture 25" is a giddy indie pop wonder dipped into a vat of musty math rock fuzziness, their sound is ever evolving. With moments of soft jazzy instrumentation, wistful lyricism, and Tropicália warmth, My New Band Believe are soulful yet sensitive, fast-paced yet patient, and bursting with energetic strangeness and contradictions.
