Cyclical syncopated beats and multi-rhythmic entanglements engulf the playing of drummer and percussionist Will Guthrie, who presents a collaboration with Danish choreographer and dancer Mette Ingvartsen entitled All Around. Mutual admirers of each other’s work for many years, and frequent collaborators-at-a-distance, All Around brings the two performers together in a co-created piece that leans into the proximate physicality between performers, drummer, and audience – and thus between music, dance, light, and space. All Around posits a stage where a drum kit, a moving light, and the performers’ bodies are all encircled by the congregation of listeners and viewers. Working with a minimal vocabulary of spinning and turning, rhythm and speed take the spotlight as each performer hurtles towards an ecstatic state of trance-like bodily release – both the dancers on their feet and Guthrie behind the drum kit. The work of Ingvartsen is characterised by a commitment to “hybridity” – combining dance and movement with different contexts such as visual art, technology, and language. Taking Ingvartsen’s adept choreography and the exceptional and proven percussive skills of Guthrie in tow, together they form a hybrid spectacle of music and movement in All Around.
