Mark Fell & Pat Thomas

Mark Fell is a multidisciplinary artist, composer, and theorist whose electronic music and sound art explores the limits of structure, rhythm, and perception; Pat Thomas is a revered improvisational pianist in the contemporary free jazz scene. These two major figures of British experimental music emerged from very different contexts: Fell came out of Sheffield’s electronic underground, where his collaborations with Mat Steel as SND and his solo work alike gifted intricate techno experiments to the UK canon of the 90s; Thomas developed his virtuosic free jazz piano approach from a young age, moving from classical piano to jazz piano at age 16, before adding samples and electronics to his toolkit. Together, the duo interweave the timeless timbres of the piano with an unfurling chaotic assemblage of electronic sounds, yet the two sound inextricably woven, with both artists impeccably dissembling the senses of control and structure that their chosen instruments contain – allowing for a freeness and improvisation that is at once wild and exact. The magic of this collaboration was captured in their late 2025 release Reality Is Not A Theory on label Black Truffle, where Thomas's masterful piano collides with Fell's unrelenting electronic manipulation.
