Radio Vitó is a new performance from Curaçao-born and Amsterdam-based theatre maker, musician-poet, and artist-researcher M Alberto. Alberto performs in contemporary classical and jazz circles with improvised and composed verse, saxophone, and synthesisers, both in their solo works and as one third of the trio Vehicle / Passenger with musicians Florian Herzog and Lesley Mok. Their new work, Radio Vitó, is an invitation into a world of radical imagination of the not-yet and the could-be. Drawn from small acts of resistance, the kinds held in a word, a rhythm, or a memory passed down, this new work dares the audience to envision a radically different world. Weaving poetry and improvisation into a musical essay-poem, Radio Vitó is a sharp critique of colonial structures; it is performed by Alberto and an international ensemble who, through their gentle and empowering playing, honour figures from the Caribbean canon as well as unsung voices from the global history of resistance.
This work is commissioned by Gaudeamus and funded by Performing Arts Fund NL and Cultuurfonds.
