Loraine James is a gatherer and cultivator of vast sounds – the producer and artist borrows from sonic realms as far flung as pop, drill, and R&B, taking fragments from each to form a club-oriented sound that is truly unique. Although attaining a revered reputation in the underground before it, James’s breakthrough happened with her album For You & I in 2019 on iconic label Hyperdub. Her collage-like and inventive assemblages of IDM, drill, ambient, and R&B sounds were pushed further in followup Reflection (2021). She has developed toward a warm, lived-in sound in recent album Gentle Confrontation (2023), where she examines her past and present in what feels like her most personal album yet. She says of the release that it’s the record a teenage version of herself would have liked to make. Taking an abstracted, mutated pop form, borrowing from the popular and underground sounds of her London childhood and adolescence, Gentle Confrontation spans rapid jungle breaks, gentle R&B melodies, and both the cavernous ambient reverberations and two-step vitality of early British dubstep. At Rewire 2024, James presents a special live A/V show alongside musician and drummer Fyn Dobson, with accompanying visuals by artist Alessandra Leone.
