Photosynthesizer

Proximity Music: The Ongoing Hum

Photosynthesizer is a musical instrument that generates soundscapes based on the electricity cyanobacteria and microalgae produce during photosynthesis. These microorganisms inside the glass vessels react to the surrounding light and thus compose and conduct the sounds you hear, offering visitors an understanding of their entanglement within the environment. The overall design of the installation is based on the shapes and structures seen in vascular and photosynthetic organisms. With their photosynthesizer, Lena Kuzmich explores how other modes of biological being and the more-than-human world can rewire one’s human sense of, and positioning in, the world.

Lena Kuzmich is a visual artist working between moving image, bio-art, and installation. In their ongoing artistic research, Kuzmich explores how one’s understanding of the world can be reconfigured through various modes of biological existence. Their work draws on a range of artistic mediums as gateways to connect with more-than-human worlds, offering entry points for multi-species encounters. Kuzmich developed Photosynthesizer during a residency at iii.
