Taking the cello to the outer-limits of its possibilities, Leila Bordreuil is a composer and sound artist based in Brooklyn whose intense music moves fluidly between noise, contemporary composition, improvisation, and drone. Said to "play the P.A." as much as she plays her cello, she uses unconventional approaches with the instrument, placing it through extreme extended techniques and unfettered amplification to spew unfathomable noise from its creaking strings and wood. Borrowing concepts from noise, free jazz, contemporary classical, and other experimental traditions, Bordreuil is untethered to genre, with each release and project and performance veering into new sonic realms: what is always present is luxurious texture and unpredictable energy. She has collaborated with artists including Lee Ranaldo, Tamio Shiraishi, Kali Malone, and two who are also performing at this year's festival: Laurel Halo and Drew McDowall. Hear her mutinous sound manipulations live at Rewire 2026.
