Listening to the peaceful, mournful music of The Hague–based composer and performer Kaðlín Sara Ólafsdóttir is like rediscovering a crumpled, forgotten letter from someone dear: its corners may be tattered and the author may be long gone, but upon coming into contact with it, one becomes filled not only with nostalgia and memories, but also with a sense of loss. The distance between what was and what came to be can never be measured, but through timbre and composition and delicate effects, Ólafsdóttir’s music comes close to resembling this indiscernible, liminal space. Her work reflects on deterioration by drawing parallels between the imperfections of memory and technology, with cassettes being her technology of choice to explore the philosophical possibilities of low-fidelity sound. Her other chosen instruments, which she uses to create beautiful ambient compositions, include synthesisers, her voice, and the clarinet. She is joined on stage by collaborator Toby Kruit.
