‘Cloister’ was created last year as a disorienting travelogue of Berlin, in reaction to lockdown, isolation, and being a recent expat. I recorded various household sounds, as well as neighbors and strangers passing by beyond the apartment windows. Outside, lockdown presented a unique opportunity to examine usually busy places like Alexanderplatz and Checkpoint Charlie, which were then mostly empty. I wanted to convey both a sense of queasiness and moving between locations. With that, there’s also a focus on texture and spatial gestures, as it relates back to these sonically slimmer environments, and my familiarity with the sounds of seclusion.
