Workshop: Deep Listening in and around Amare

with Kristin Norderval

In this Deep Listening workshop, singer and composer-improviser Kristin Norderval leads the audience through a deeper connection to listening with the Deep Listening™ method as developed by renowned composer-performer Pauline Oliveros (1932–2016). The workshop invites participants for a collective session of walking, scoring, and sounding in and around Amare.

Deep Listening explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary, selective nature of listening. The practice includes bodywork, sonic meditations, and interactive performance to cultivate a heightened awareness of one’s sonic environment, both external and internal. It is playful, collaborative, and improvisatory. As a certified Deep Listening practitioner, Kristin Norderval continues Pauline Oliveros’s practice of attentive sonic awareness.

The workshop is open to anyone wishing to explore listening and sounding inspired by the sounds of daily life, one’s own thoughts, imagination, and dreams. No previous musical training is necessary. Please register for a free ticket here. The meeting point is at the Amare entrance hall at Spuiplein.

Kristin Norderval is a Culture Moves Europe grantee and an Artist in Residence at Studio Loos. This work was produced with the financial assistance of the European Union. The views expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.

After the workshop, Kristin Norderval will give a lecture performance with her Expanded Vocal Improvising Instrument. She will also join the conversation Veering Voices, on Friday, 5 April.
