A fascination with memory defines the output of printmaker, classically-trained vocalist, sound artist and composer Ian William Craig. With a background in musical theatre and the choral tradition, the Vancouver-based artist weaves choral, ambient and noise influences together to create mesmeric performances using analogue synthesizers, reel-to-reel machines and faulty tape decks. Across a rich discography of releases, including the gorgeous ‘Centres’ and ‘Thresholder’ for FatCat’s post-classical imprint 130701, Craig unearths the sublime from physical deterioration and beauty from decay over sumptuous compositions featuring the artist’s own modulated voice as the emotional core.
