Hulubalang

Hulubalang is the solo project of Aditya Surya Taruna, aka Kasimyn, one half of the Indonesian dance duo Gabber Modus Operandi – who created music for Chunky Move's U>N>I>T>E>D and performs as part of Asian Dope Boys's PHYSIS, which both appear at Rewire this year. As a solo practitioner he worked on Björk's 2022 album, Fossora, and then released his debut solo record BUNYI BUNYI TUMBAL in 2023 on Jordanian label Drowned By Locals. Translated as "Synthetic Feeling for Anonymous Sacrifice," the record is born from his research into Indonesian colonial archives and war images. It thus channels a powerful and discomforting energy, touching on themes of violence and displacement through a ritualistic spattering of bass music, experimental electronics, distorted samples, and potent percussion. Kasimyn's music settles like scars from a clash between the futuristic and the ancient; through its undeniable cathartic release, Hulubalang's songs offer a sense of regeneration and smoldering potential.
