The Manchester-based DJ and producer FUMU is a sonic force to be reckoned with. Their debut on label YOUTH, Sinuate (2018), introduced their unique style of rhythmic industrial electronic music. Their mutant synthesis, raucous samples, and garbled lo-fi percussion were honed further on follow-up Almost, Never, Nearly Where? (2021), where infernal vocal verses too entered the fray. FUMU’s latest album, also on YOUTH, Enter The Anima (2022), is a dubby cyberpunk convergence of synthetic arpeggios, acidic basslines, and crushing percussion. Its tones and beats conjure visions of a dank, rainy, near-future, lit by neon but tarnished by rust. Although one can never know exactly what they’re going to get with the possessed, cybernetic music of FUMU – spanning a tempo range between 70 bpm and 300 bpm – some things are a consistent throughline: searing distortion, impeccable rhythm, and capital-b Bass.
