Dumama

Dumama is the project of South African musician, composer, and vocalist Gugulethu Duma, originally from the Eastern Cape and currently based in Berlin. Listeners first encountered her vivid approach to voice and songwriting through the duo project dumama and kechou, whose album Buffering Juju (2020) revealed an intimate relationship between storytelling and resonant, folk-rooted instrumentation. Her forthcoming debut solo album, Towards an Expanse, expands this foundation through spacious arrangements that merge contemporary classical subtleties with intricate electro acoustic production, jazz-influenced textures and, most of all, her incredible vocal storytelling and singing. Each piece unfolds through layered metaphor, transforming language into rhythm and frequency, where voice becomes archive, instrument and carrier of memory. Dumama's practice plays with the deconstruction and critique of archaic modes of representation in Southern African performance culture, experimenting in the middle-space between oral tradition and emergent poetic expression. At Rewire 2026, Dumama will be joined by her band to perform music from her upcoming record.
