Devon Rexi are an Amsterdam-based group creating dubby, playful alternative electronic music. Originally formed by Nic Mauskovic on drums and vocals and Nushin Naini on bass and vocals, they have since expanded into a quintet featuring Tobias Jansen on turntables and production, Lyckle de Jong on synths and effects, and Goya van der Heyden on percussion. On recent release, Biya Ba Man (2024), the band’s special brand of post-punky psych-funk can be heard: pitch-shifted vocals – sometimes chanting, sometimes chirping – intertwine with distorted grooves, propelled by percussion and bass. In an interview with The Quietus, Mauskovic, referring to the no-wave influences on their sound, speaks of the band, saying “none of us write songs. We are groove people.” Involved in the close-knit scene around Amsterdam label South Of North, Devon Rexi have a collaborative and communal spirit that is clearly heard in the fruitful, joyful songs they play together.
